Same, Same but Different - Race Report ÖTILLÖ The Swimrun World Championship 2021

Finish strong - from the last cut-off until the finish line at Utö Värdshus we were top ten in the women’s team. Running up the last hill with power left. No injuries, no hypothermia. Cutting our time from 2019 by 40 minutes! Charged with endorphins and being able to enjoy the evening without major fatigue. That is in summary the achievement of Team ULAN’s ÖtillÖ performance 2021. Happy and proud. The best birthday a 45-year-old swimrunner could wish for, welcomed with champagne at the finish line due to Anna’s birthday - we truly felt like winners! Same, same but different. That’s what swimrun and ÖtillÖ is all about. No race, even with the exact same path and same racers will be anything like the last experience. And it is impossible to predict what could be your real obstacles this time. Starting to prepare, mentally and physically, in February this year when we got our spot to the World Championship. Still never really ready for what is ahead during the 75km “wilderness” across num...

Life Gets Bigger - Race Report ÖtillÖ Malta November 2019

Image
While the days got shorter and darker at home, the weekend for this season’s last swimrun race came closer and closer. The previous race was already 2 months ago, Koster swimrun in the end of September. It almost felt like the season was over, and it felt a bit strange to once again pack all the things for our equipment - wetsuit, pull buoy, paddles… what else should we include? So easy to forget something when time has passed since the last swimrun training sessions outdoors, and the routines are not completely up-to-date.  However all our worries quickly went away when we landed at Malta International airport. The blue Mediterranean ocean below us looked amazing, we started to long for the race and to explore nature, to get into the waves and on to new challenging trails. Little did we know what we were going to experience and in what way we were going to be brutally challenged. During the ÖtillÖ Sprint and Experience races on Saturday we got into the water and it was ve...

Race Report - ÖTILLÖ The Swimrun World Championship 2019

Some time in the beginning of 2019 Anna realised that there might actually be a slight chance for “Team ULAN powered by TIBCO” to get a spot in the ÖTILLÖ Swimrun World Championship , based on our ranking points. We had participated in Borås swimrun and ÖtillÖ Cannes in the previous year and had collected quite a few ranking points. Anna asked Ulrika “Why don't we send in an application?”.  As Ulrika is never one to refuse a challenge, soon it was all said and done. Unfortunately, 7 teams in the women’s category had applied and there were only 5 spots available. Team ULAN came in 6th on the list, just missing out on the last spot.  Since we now were on the reserve list, and there was still hope of getting a spot, we started the mental and physical preparations. Spring and Summer passed with a lot of other Swimrun competitions. In the beginning of August, just before we were due to start in the Öloppet race outside Gothenburg, we got the email that we had anticipated for so...
